Analysis of the sustainability of wind power plants installed on complex terrains: Case study: Ivan Sedlo mountain

  • In the practice, theses of unlimited reserves of fossil fuels have been proven as untrue and there is a need for a new strategy for production and consumption of electricity based on the criteria of sustainability. Providing of useful energy of fossil fuel is resulting in resources depletion on one side and on the other side it requires using of modern technology (state-of-the art technology) which is consistent with EU environmental standards. Due to this it is necessary to use sustainable and renewable technology first of all wind which is free and in non-limited amount. For the above reasons, researchers from the Mechanical Engineering faculty in Sarajevo researched the possibilities for utilization of wind energy for electricity generation of one part of a wider location on the Ivan Sedlo mountain nearly Sarajevo. As is well known, key factors for installation of wind turbines are velocity and frequency of wind and turbulence intensity. In this paper, measurement data from a 30-meter measurement mast for the period from September 2007 to September 2008 will be analyzed and based on them a wind turbine was selected, annual electricity generation estimated and simple economic analysis made. General index of sustainability on the basis of multicriteria analysis of 8 different options of electricity generation, including wind energy, is given.
