Investigation of the suitability of Serbian lignite Kolubara and Kovin for burning in CFBC boilers

  • The results of exhaustive investigations of behavior of lignite's Kolubara and Kovin during combustion in fluidized bed are presented in the paper. Investigation was carried out due to the interest of Serbian Electric Power Production Company to use CFBC boilers in the process of refurbishment of old pulverized coal combustion boilers. As a part of feasibility study for use of CFBC boilers in power plants in Serbia, investigation of combustion characteristics of lignite's was performed using original methodology introduced many years ago by Laboratory for thermal engineering and energy. Methodology was approved during long period by investigation of more than 20 domestic coals for FBC combustion, with the aim to determine design data for bubbling FBC boilers and hot gas generators. Special at tension was paid to an analyze similarities and differences of the BFBC and CFBC and to approve that methodology developed for bubbling fluidized bed combustion conditions can be used also to analyze coal suitability for combustion in circulating fluidized bed boilers. Four qualities of Kolubara lignite, with different heat capacity from 2.5 to 8.5 MJ/kg, and different ash contents were in vest gated, and also lignite Kovin in the same range of heat capacity. Investigations were per formed in three phases: (1) ultimate and proximate analysis, determination of ash sintering temperature by standard method and in fluidized bed laboratory oven, (2) investigations in laboratory fluidized bed furnace and determination of coal particle fragmentation, burning rate and start-up temperature, self sculpture capture, and (3) investigation of combustion in pilot-plant in stationary combustion conditions. It is approved that methodology used is suit able for coal suitability analysis for combustion in CFBC boilers. The results obtained have shown that lignite's investigated can be efficiently burned in CFBC boilers, even more efficiently than in BFBC boilers. The results on combustion behavior of lignite's presents good data base for feasibility study of the CFBC boiler use in Serbian power plants, choice of the type and de sign of CFBC boilers.
