Indoor pollution investigation in primary school classrooms

  • Children are particularly vulnerable population for the presence of pollutants in indoor environment. Therefore, there is a great importance of air quality to the children health. Outdoor air pollution, the way of interior ventilation, a large number of children in classrooms and their activities will also affect on air quality in schools. In order to evaluate quality of the interior air, set of measurements were conducted at six measuring points (in five classrooms and one outside) in an elementary school in the urban setting. This paper presents and analyzes concentrations of different physical and chemical pollutants in the indoor and outdoor environment: carbon-dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, nitric dioxide, volatile organic compounds, total suspended particles and particulate matters with different diameters (up to 2.5 mm and 10 mm), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. The furniture, the construction materials of building, walls and floors construction materials, paints, varnishes as well as combustion of coal in the furnace of the boiler for heating space affect the increase concentrations of the analyzed pollutants.
