Distributive energy production using coal from small mines

  • Under ground coal mines in Serbia are in economic, financial and production crisis al ready many years. Starting from 1965 one by one are closed, and in active mines production is decreasing year by year. Reasons are both global, and local. One of the main reasons for un economic production is large amount of small classes produced (about 60% of whole production are fractions between 3 to 5 mm) for which in Serbia there is no market, and are disposed on the ground, making also environmental problems. In 2002, ordered by Government of the Republic Serbia, under supervising of the Ministry for science, technologies and development, Serbia's Economic Development Strategy up to 2010 has been done. In the frame of Energy Strategy up to 2010, separate study Energy Production Using Coal from Small Mines, was done, dealing with possibilities to use coal produced in under ground mines for distributive energy production. Special attention was paid to find market for small size coal. Several scenario were analyzed with common idea - to use whole production (including small classes) by implementation of fluidized bed boilers, both for heat and electric energy production. In present paper main conclusion of the mentioned study are given. Based on estimated coal reserves for under ground and open mining in small mines prognosis of possible in crease of coal production, both in active and new mines is given up to year 2010, and estimation of necessary in vestments and coal production prices. By proposing several scenario, construction of several power plants for combined heat and electric energy production both in vicinity of mines and small towns are discusses, and alternatively, if there is no heat consumption construction of power plants are suggested. Implementation of the fluidized bed technology is suggested both due to the high fuel flexibility and environmental issues. Necessary investments for power and heat plants are estimated, as well as possible heat and electric energy production and influence on substitution of imported fuels and electric energy.
